The city offers a mix of housing opportunities. A little more than half the housing units in the city are owned, the remainder are rented. The media asking price for a house is about $112,000; median rent with utilities is about $1,265.
Helena has a lot of older homes, many are mansionesque, dating back to the 1880s. The Mansion District is filled with great examples of older style architecture, including the Queen Anne former governor’s mansion. Many of the city’s older homes have been divided into apartments, complementing the many conventional apartment complexes in the city.
All of Montana has faced housing issues in the past 10 years or so. Many people, including those in business and the arts “discovered” the splendor of the state and moved there with deep pockets, causing changes in the housing market.
